It was just before eight pm on a Saturday and even though we were guaranteed a dry day, it hadn't given up on raining! Ray and I were seated discussing the weekend's football, ready for the 6th fuel drain that day to arrive. Inevitably we received a phone call from a woman on a company excursion who had gone to the BP filling station in Lea and put petrol in a diesel son's Ford Club Wagon hire car. The poor thing was rather agitated by the sounds of it, saying "I simply can't believe that I've wrecked the vehicle! I am just so accustomed to putting petrol in my petrol car I had did not remember that I was running a diesel!" We told her to settle back and not to fret, and also that things like this can happen. She had managed to get the car into a secure space and, because it was no more than a short distance away from our van, we were able to get to the customer right away. The incorrect fuel was drained so she was able to get back to the motel she was staying at. Even though we got very drenched, it was all rewarding to see her drive off calm and not so apprehensive. Another fuel drain in Lincolnshire done well in my mind!

The 3 things you MUST know about petrol in diesel!

Water Contamination or AdBlue Contamination

Water contaminated fuel, whether it's petrol or diesel, tends to be a significant condition to take care of in a motor vehicle - particularly in modern day common-rail engines.

Water or AdBlue in your diesel or petrol will often bring about idling difficulties, uneven running, increased smoke and, if it is not addressed effectively, possibly blown injectors. Having water in petrol is less difficult to get rid of in comparison with water in diesel - this is mostly due to the fact that diesel is an oil. Nevertheless we are able to handle both circumstances pretty simply.

You should know though that whenever the vehicle was run with the fuel contaminated with water it will very likely require a new fuel filter to be fitted since the old one will undoubtedly be thoroughly water-logged and useless.

Waste Fuel Disposal

Got a fuel container laying in the back of your garden with old, useless or contaminated fuel? We can assist you to dispose of it. We have been called out to several domestic and business premises in Lincolnshire to deal with taking away and disposing of fuel storages. We are licenced by the Environment Agency to be able to remove and recycle waste fuel safely and legally.

Whether the fuel storage is a subterranean container, a portable bowser, or perhaps several containers in a storage shed, as long as we can get to it, we could certainly drain it.

Wrong Fuel in Car Lincolnshire - Petrol in Diesel Car Lea

I am not actually overly enthusiastic about doing work on Sundays, and a while back was the same. I'd just come away from the family after having a superb Sunday roast prepared for us by the missus, and I was on my way to sort out a man after he filled the incorrect fuel in his cobalt blue Toyota FJ Cruiser. He was located in Lea so I arrived on scene very quickly. Just as I drove up right behind the car and started work he said to me "Thank the Almighty! I stupidly had my attention on something else and did not grasp that I have put diesel in my petrol car. Have I inflicted harm by simply starting it?" I stated that generally there should not be any problems and also that I would personally remove the contaminated fuel as quickly as possible. It goes without saying that I drained the fuel from the car and put in the appropriate fuel, and then another delighted client was able to carry on with their journey without bother. He could not stop thanking me, and that is exactly what can make working on Sundays in Lincolnshire that little bit better to me!

Wrong Fuel Doctor Lea - Fuel Rescue Lea

This was exactly what is called an unsociable time to be on the road. It was roughly sunrise and noone was around. It had been pretty quiet thus far, and me and Brian were relaxing reading through a few old magazines. This was an unusual restful time in Lincolnshire. Actually it was in fact so quiet that the instant the phone eventually rang I leaped with surprise! The customer on the other end said: "I've just ended my night shift and incredibly filled the wrong fuel in the diesel racing green Mazda MX-5 in error". We instructed him to tell us exactly where the vehicle was and we headed out, getting to him in Lea under half an hour later. The wrong fuel was removed from the engine. He thanked us for coming out so fast. While we were going back home we noticed two young women on the edge of the road who looked like they had a flat. Obviously we stopped to help them change it, to their delight.

How to find out if I put the wrong fuel in my car?

If you’ve just filled up at a petrol station and the cars starts to act a bit strange you might start to wonder if you accidentally put the wrong fuel in it.

Well, there are a few things to can check that will be able to tell you:

  1. How is the car responding? There are some very common misfuel symptoms which can be a good indicator of wrong fuel:
    • Loss of engine power – can feel like the car has run out of fuel
    • A lot of smoke (more than usual)
    • Engine coughing or starting to splutter
    • Won’t start – or keeps stalling.
  2. Look at your fuel receipt. It will state clearly if you filled up with diesel or unleaded. If you don’t have the receipt, you can often return to the petrol station where you filled up and give them the date and time (and pump) where you refueled and they will often be able to give you a VA receipt.
  3. Smell it. Diesel and petrol have very distinctly different smells. Anyone familiar with the motor industry should be able to help you with this. Or you could even get another car to park alongside and smell the fuel caps of both, comparing them to determine what the fuel type is.
  4. Call us to come out and assess the car. In the majority of cases we will be able to tell if the car has been misfueled before beginning work on it. If we discover that the vehicle does not need a fuel drain, you will only be charged a call-out fee.
